AI features and smart suggestions

xPlant uses AI-powered search and workflow suggestions to help you find records faster and spot patterns in your lab data. This guide explains how those features work, what data they use, and how to control your contribution settings.

Plan access and usage limits

AI features — including smart search and workflow suggestions — are available on Pro and Enterprise plans.

Hourly usage limits

To keep the service reliable for everyone, AI requests are subject to per-hour limits:

  • Pro — 50 requests per hour
  • Enterprise — 200 requests per hour

Limits reset automatically each hour. If you reach your limit, a message will appear and AI features will be temporarily unavailable until the window resets.

What AI powers in xPlant

Smart search across your lab

Search finds plants, explants, SOPs, and media recipes by meaning, not just exact keywords. Type a symptom, a stage description, or a common name and relevant records surface — even when the wording doesn't match exactly.

Suggestions while you work

When logging a stage or transfer, xPlant can suggest contamination types, observation notes, and next-stage options based on patterns from similar workflows.

How suggestions improve over time

Search results and suggestions improve when the system can learn from real lab activity. When you opt in, anonymised signals from your searches and workflows are converted into numerical patterns and stored in a private index. These patterns are never linked back to your account, your plants, or your lab.

The improvement is cumulative — more opted-in users means better suggestions for everyone on the platform over time. Opting out does not degrade your current search quality.

What is collected when you opt in

SignalWhat is stored
Search queriesThe text you type into the search bar, anonymised before storage.
Stage eventsThe stage type and a general workflow context — no plant names or species text.
SOP usageWhich category of SOP was applied — not the SOP content itself.
Transfer eventsTransfer type and vessel type, without any identifying record IDs.

What is never collected

  • Your name, email address, or any account identifier
  • Plant names, cultivar names, or specific species text
  • Images, media recipe formulations, or SOP content
  • Data from users who have not opted in
  • Workspace names, team names, or lab identifiers

How to opt in or opt out

The setting is off by default

  1. Go to Settings → Data & Privacy
  2. Find the AI & Data section
  3. Toggle Help improve AI suggestions on or off

You can change this setting at any time. Turning it off stops new signals from being captured. Previously collected signals are retained in the index but are not linked to your identity.
